Hamburger Hill

A Bia Hill, located in Le Loc hamlet, Hong Bac commune, A Luoi district, Thua Thien Hue province, is a strategically important hilltop in the mountainous region. Standing atop the hill, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of A Luoi valley. The journey to A Bia Hill is treacherous, yet once atop, the terrain flattens out, facilitating the construction of military installations, depots, helipads, and artillery positions. It is these strategic advantages that made A Bia Hill a contested objective between our forces and the enemy.

Directions to A Bia Hill – Hamburger Hill

To reach A Bia Hill, visitors can start from the center of A Luoi district, traveling along National Highway 49 towards Hong Bac commune. From there, follow the trail leading into Le Loc hamlet. Due to the rugged and complex terrain, it’s advisable for visitors to travel with a guide or local residents to ensure safety. The ascent may involve steep and challenging sections, but the pristine and majestic natural landscape makes the journey fascinating and memorable.

Historical Significance of A Bia Hill – Hamburger Hill

In mid-May 1969, American and South Vietnamese forces launched Operation Apache Snow to attack A Bia Hill, resulting in a historic battle between the U.S. military and our forces, particularly the 324th Division and local forces from A Luoi. The battle at A Bia Hill, known to American soldiers as “Hamburger Hill,” is regarded as one of the fiercest and most intense battles in Vietnam War history for U.S. forces.

Operation Apache Snow lasted for nine days and nights from May 10 to May 18, 1969, aimed at destroying the People’s Liberation Armed Forces of South Vietnam in the A Shau Valley region. The operation involved three phases, with the participation of 13 battalions, including 8 battalions from the U.S. Airborne Division, supported by air and artillery. However, under the fierce resistance of the 324th Division and local forces from A Luoi, the operation failed, and A Bia Hill became “Blood Falls on the Mountain” instead of “Snow Falls on the Mountain” as hoped by the Americans.

Historical Significance of A Bia Hill

The victory at A Bia Hill not only thwarted the U.S. military’s ambitions for an honorable retreat but also caused a significant shock within the United States. This victory contributed to burying the dream of controlling strategic bases of successive U.S. Presidents and military commanders in South Vietnam, marking the end of localized war strategies and forcing the U.S. to adopt a Vietnamization policy and expand the war across Indochina.

It can be affirmed that the victory at A Bia Hill was a dual victory for the Vietnamese people’s military, with monumental historical significance and stature; it was a shining milestone in our people’s resistance against the imperialist aggression of the United States. Recognized as a Provincial Historical Site by Decision No. 2372/QD-UBND dated October 13, 2006, A Bia Hill today is not only a historical site but also a destination that attracts visitors interested in exploring and understanding history, contributing to the education of patriotic traditions and national pride for younger generations.

The A Don Tunnel Historical Site

The A Don Tunnel historical site, located on A Don Hill in Can Nong village, Quang Nham commune, A Luoi district, Thua Thien Hue province, is not only a unique military structure but also a place that preserves the heroic history of the Vietnamese people during the resistance war against the United States.

Getting to the A Don Tunnel
To reach the A Don Tunnel, visitors can start from the center of A Luoi town, travel westward along QL49B road to Quang Nham commune. From there, follow the directions from the locals to find the path leading up to A Don Hill, where the historical tunnel is located.

History and Importance of the A Don Tunnel
In January 1968, as Hanoi was preparing to celebrate the Tet Offensive, a group of officials, reporters, editors, and technical workers from the Voice of Vietnam were urgently assigned to the southern battlefield to establish the Liberation Radio Station in Hue. This station was to support the General Offensive and Uprising of the military and people of Tri Thien Hue. The team of 16 people was led by Comrade Nguyen Kim Cuc, with Comrade Nguyen Thanh, Deputy General Director of the Voice of Vietnam, directly commanding.

After 20 days and nights of traversing forests and streams, the team reached A So valley in A Luoi district, western Thua Thien Hue. However, due to the intense combat situation, the Liberation Radio Station in Hue could not move to the lowlands and had to remain in the western base of Thua Thien Hue. The team moved to the Pa Dung mountainous area near the To Rinh River to establish their operational base. The 559th Transport Battalion sent an engineering platoon to help dig a tunnel through the mountain, and the Civil Administration Party Committee of western Thua Thien Hue provided a militia platoon to protect and support logistics.

Structure of the A Don Tunnel
The A Don Tunnel is divided into two main areas:

Area I: Consists of a tunnel with two interconnected entrances. Entrance 1 faces east, with a height of 1.5 meters, a width of 1.5 meters, and a length of 10 meters. Entrance 2 is about 10.8 meters south of Entrance 1. This area served as the living and dining quarters for the technical staff and editors of the station.

Area II: Consists of a tunnel with two interconnected entrances and extends into the mountain in a Y-shape. Entrance 1 is oriented west, with a height of 2.5 meters, a width of 2 meters, and a length of 6 meters. Entrance 2 is about 12.5 meters northeast of Entrance 1, with a height of 2.5 meters, a width of 2 meters, and a length of 20 meters. The Y-shaped layout of the tunnel was used for daily operations and housed the technical equipment and broadcast systems of the Liberation Radio Station in Hue.

Operations and Significance of the Liberation Radio Station in Hue
Once the base was established, the Liberation Radio Station in Hue installed a transmitter and communicated with the Southern Liberation Radio Station in Hanoi using a 15-watt VTD transmitter. Although it existed for a short period, the station played a crucial role in broadcasting the voice of the Party and the people, boosting the morale of the officers, soldiers, and people of Tri Thien Hue during the fierce enemy counterattacks.

Historical Significance of the A Don Tunnel
The A Don Tunnel historical site – headquarters of the Liberation Radio Station in Hue, signifies the great victory of our military and people during the Tet Offensive of 1968 in the southern battlefield, especially in Tri Thien Hue. The tunnel is a powerful testament to the intelligence and creativity of our military and people in overcoming hardships, ensuring necessary communication for the battlefield, and promptly encouraging the fighting spirit.

The A Don Tunnel historical site – headquarters of the Liberation Radio Station in Hue was recognized as a provincial-level historical site on October 13, 2006. Today, the tunnel serves not only as a place for educating about patriotic traditions but also as a source of pride for the contributions of the people of Quang Nham commune, A Luoi district, in the resistance war against the United States.

A So Airport

A So Airport is located in Dong Son commune, A Luoi district, Thua Thien Hue province. To reach A So Airport from the center of Hue city, you can travel by car or motorbike along National Highway 49 for about 66 kilometers. When you reach the Bot Do intersection (Highway 72 – 14B), turn right southwest for another 2 kilometers to reach the airport.

A So Airport was built by the U.S. imperialists in the 1960s to strengthen their military capacity against the armed activities of our soldiers and civilians. Along with A So Airport, the U.S. also constructed A Co Airport in Hong Thuong and A Luoi Airport in A Luoi town. The main purpose of these airports was to control the strategic western corridor of the Truong Son mountain range, preventing the growth of the strategic Ho Chi Minh Trail from the North to the South. However, all efforts by the U.S. failed to achieve their objectives.

In 1966, seizing a favorable opportunity across the southern battlefield, the main force of the 325th Division, along with local troops and militia, attacked and liberated the A Sau outpost and A So Airport, expanding the liberated area in the southern part of A Luoi district. This victory created favorable conditions for the strategic transportation route of the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

In an effort to recapture the liberated area, the U.S. imperialists and their henchmen sprayed Agent Orange, causing severe environmental and human consequences. This toxic chemical still affects the area today, resulting in much suffering and loss.

A So Airport not only marks the achievements of our soldiers and civilians but also bears witness to the crimes of the U.S. imperialists and their henchmen. It serves as a reminder to today’s generations to cherish the victories of the many generations who have fallen, symbolizing the resilient and indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people.

Visit A So Airport to learn more about the nation’s heroic history and honor the soldiers who sacrificed for the country’s independence and freedom. This will undoubtedly be a memorable and meaningful experience for every visitor to A Luoi.
